It takes more than time to heal

Unmothered: A Daughter’s Guide to Acceptance, Healing, and Renewal contains nine steps to healing. These steps are also the chapters in the book. I’ve listed them here so you can see each one and the actions needed to through the journey. You can take all the time needed and the path that works for you. This is what God gave me to share:

 

 Part 1: Acceptance

  1. A Ratty Christmas - Acknowledging the Trauma

    You must admit if your mother is causing or has caused trauma with her behavior.

  2. Hurt People Hurt People - Knowing the Back Story

    You need to understand her story and if she also dealt with trauma or other issues.

  3. Mask Off - Accepting the Truth About Who She Is

    Now that you can see her for who she is, stop expecting a different mother to show up.

 

Part 2: Healing

4. Grieving the Loss of a Mother-Daughter Relationship

Feel the loss and make peace with not having a close mother-daughter relationship.

5. Grieving Her Lost Potential

You may feel like she wasted her ability to do something with her life; move through it.

6. If Your Mother Died Today, Would You Grieve?

Stop and really consider how you would feel because you may not be prepared.

7. Forgiveness Is for You, Not Them

Forgiveness serves to heal you. It does not let the one who harmed you off the hook.

8. Don’t Forget to Forgive Yourself

You are the most important piece in all of this so treat yourself well.
